Composer Research Project Bibliography

Keep in mind throughout your research for your Composer Research Project that you should always cite your sources.  Everyone deserves credit for their own published works and plagiarism is not something taken lightly.

Your bibliography for your Composer Research Project does not need to be in a specific format, but should contain the following:
*at least 3 sources total
*1 or more sources from a book/encyclopedia (NOT online)

While I did say it does not need to be in a specific format, there are websites that can help you to create your bibliography using the information you gather.  That is probably the best way to create it.

A great website that can help you with your bibliography is: www.bibme.org.

2nd Term Concert Requirement

As I explained in class today, your 2nd term concert requirement will be a concert report. There are a few things you need to keep in mind for the concert you attend:

--It should be at least 30 minutes long.
--It can be instrumental, vocal, or choral.
--It cannot be a pop/rock concert.
--It should not have all prerecorded music.
--You need to attend the concert in person. (TV/radio broadcasts do not count unless you are actually in the audience.)
--If you have any questions about if a concert would work, please ask me BEFORE the concert!
--You cannot count concerts attended prior to 2nd term (before November 4th) without my approval.

Some great ideas of concerts you could attend are piano/other instrument/vocal recital, band concert, orchestra concert, symphony concert, opera, ballet, school musical, choir concert, and church performances (that include at least 30 minutes of music).  The concert does not need to cost money!  There are many free concerts that would be acceptable.  Some examples include school concerts, studio recitals, and church performances.  Our school will have a choir/band concert on December 16th at 7PM.  It would be a great opportunity to see some of your classmates perform and count for your concert report.  This is a great time of year for this assignment because there are SO MANY concerts around the Christmas season!

When you attend the concert, please be sure you are using appropriate audience etiquette by turning off your phone, not entering/exiting in the middle of a song, not talking, not yelling out to people you know on the stage, and staying for the entire performance.

You will turn in a paper on the concert you attend.  The paper should give details about the performance such as who was performing, when it was, where it was, and what kinds of instruments were used (if applicable).  You should also include details about the song(s) performed and composer(s).  Finally, you should give your feedback about the concert.  Include at least one thing you liked and one thing you did not like about the concert.  A ticket stub or program should be attached to your paper as well.

You may turn in your concert report any time during the term.  It is due by January 8th.  If you have any questions, please ask me in class or send me an e-mail.  You can also leave a comment!

Enjoy the show!

A Composer WebQuest

We are now getting started on our Composer Research Project!  I found a wonderful WebQuest that can definitely help with the research, if any of you are interested.  You are not required to complete it, but there are some useful links that can help in finding out more information about your composer.  Why not check it out?  (Hint: look at the bottom of the "Process" page to find the helpful links.)

Music Reading Websites

We have been working this past term on reading music.  I know it can be daunting when you have never read music before, but there are a few websites you can look at to get some help if you need it.  Here are a few of my favorite:
www.musictheory.net- This is a great website for music theory that includes lessons, exercises, and tools.
oneminutemusiclesson.com- This website has one minute videos that explain the fundamentals of pitch, treble/bass clef, the piano keyboard, and accidentals, among other things.
teoria.com- Under the tutorials section, there are many lessons on reading music that include note values and note names, in case you need a review in both areas.

There are many other websites, but these are just a few places that could help.
